Recent Happenings

I've been a little quiet on here for the last month or so, I had a lot going on! So here's a little catchup on some of the best bits I neglected to tell you about...

A definite highlight of the last month or so was djing two nights in a row at the infamous Jazz Cafe in London - First up was a set supporting one of hip hop's all time greatest MCs, the legendary Big Daddy Kane, pictured with me above! He gave an incredible show as always, and the event presented with me with a rare opportunity to play a load of my favourite 80's & early 90's hip hop tracks, including a best of Juice Crew set. The following night I was back at the Jazz Cafe to spin all eras Hip Hop & R'n'B videos, yes videos! at the new Doctors Orders A/V night, I'm back at it there again this coming Friday night, more on that in a bit...

Another highlight of the month was headlining the fresh new Hip Hop/RnB night 'Next Level' in Stoke Newington - look out for these guys, they certainly know how to throw a party, and this one allowed me to go where I wanted to musically - playing a wide range of styles covering all eras of hip hop & rnb, from the classics right up to present day trap bangers and everything in between! Look out for future collaborations with these guys, I promise I will give you more notice next time!

Finally I have good news for those missing the Droppin' Science Show ! We will be back putting out regular mixes of the freshest hip hop around this June, in a new and improved format! Stay tuned...

In the summer of 2012 I was invited to dj at the Chocolate Bear Productions annual barbeque here in London, alongside a ridiculously sick line up of djs - we were all asked to choose a genre to play, I went for New Jack Swing, and it went a little something like this…

For those that don't know, the New Jack Swing sound of the late 80's and early 90's brought together Hip Hop and R & B for the first time, to great commercial success. I first encountered it as a 9 year old, when I had the Ghostbusters 2 soundtrack featuring Bobby Brown's 'On My Own' on heavy rotation in my oversized walkman! This mix includes a lot of the biggest dancefloor classics of the time alongside a few not so well-known joints, and of course plenty of Teddy Riley productions.

Years of hard work fine tuning his turntablist technique and digging for beats have made X-Kutz one of London's freshest Djs. He currently mashes up Hip Hop, Dubstep and D&B shows all around London and has held various residencies including performing alongside Jazzy Jeff, Rodney P and Katy B, & was resident DJ at the seminal Deal Real open mic show where he was featured on primetime television show CD:UK.

FBBB & Desperados Freeze Festival After Party 29.10.11

As I mentioned in my last post about djing at London's Freeze festival as part of FBBB (For Boarders By Boarders) , we can finally reveal we will also be hosting the Official Freeze after party alongside Desperados at The Lightbox in Vauxhall, early bird tickets are available here for only £6! After that they'll be £8, £10 on the door.

Earlier this year I was asked to dj a guest slot at London's Classic Material, a clubnight dedicated to chronicling the history of hip hop year by year.

I was asked to spin at the 1995 event, a great year for hip hop and of particular relevance to me as it was around this time I started my addiction to buying hip hop records, spending all my spare cash & lunch money on LPs & 12's!

I ended up playing over 2 hours at Classic Material, and these mixes represent how I put it down that night, and in roughly the same order. To the best of my knowledge I followed the rules of the event, playing tracks either released on 12" or on an LP released in 1995, along with any original songs they sampled - This means for example I get away with playing 'Daaam' by Tha Alkoholiks even though the single dropped in '94, as it was also on their 'Coast II Coast' LP in '95..

For anyone out there thinking where's all the Wu-tang / Pharcyde / Group Home releases etc. - relax! you'll find them & a lot more in Volume II, dropping soon…
