Digga Please? and Size Doesn't Matter present...

7"s all night long

2 of London's finest 45s-only crews take it uptown for a battle of EAST vs WEST on the turntables. The beef has been simmering for years, with both crews claiming to be "London's Best 7" Night", so it's time to take it to the streets - who will take the crown??

with DJs...

going head-to-head with 7"s ALL NIGHT LONG!

reggae / soul / funk / hip hop / disco / acid house / pop

and don't forget: HIP HOP FANCY DRESS!

Dust off your Kangols, Sergio Tacchinis, Colorados, Gazelles, Bubblegooses and Cazals, cos we're takign it back to the block party. Rock a chain, tip that cap to the side, but most of all MAKE IT FRESH

£5 entry - £3 in fancy dress

Fluid, 40-42 Charterhouse Street, Farringdon EC1M 6JN

Monday, 28 November 2011

This Saturday don't miss this rare chance to witness a rare show by 3 of the planet's most advanced turntablists! Support comes from myself & my brother Dj Daredevil, as well as an exclusive showcase performance by UK turntablist duo Grandeurs of Delusion performing tracks from their all-scratched LP 'Night Of The Flavigator'.

D-Styles, DJ Excess and Toadstyle, both solo and in their legendary collaborations between themselves and with others as Ned Hoddings, Gunkhole and Beatjunkies have been shaking up the underground turntablist scene. Emphasising musical composition and style over highly technical yet repetitive scratching, their incredible innovations and dazzling performances, have redefined the turntable from being a record player, to a musical instrument. Refusing to adhere to musical boundaries and blurring the lines between straight sampled and scratched, there lives manage to join the dots between free jazz, funk and hiphop with the low-end developments that resonate with the UK’s bass music scene.

Saturday December 3rd, 7.30pm-10.30pm at Barfly, Camden

DJ Matman - Classic Material Guest Mix: 1995 Volume 1 [Stream / Download]

Earlier this year I was asked to dj a guest slot at London's Classic Material, a clubnight dedicated to chronicling the history of hip hop year by year.

I was asked to spin at the 1995 event, a great year for hip hop and of particular relevance to me as it was around this time I started my addiction to buying hip hop records, spending all my spare cash & lunch money on LPs & 12's!

I ended up playing over 2 hours at Classic Material, and these mixes represent how I put it down that night, and in roughly the same order. To the best of my knowledge I followed the rules of the event, playing tracks either released on 12" or on an LP released in 1995, along with any original songs they sampled - This means for example I get away with playing 'Daaam' by Tha Alkoholiks even though the single dropped in '94, as it was also on their 'Coast II Coast' LP in '95..

For anyone out there thinking where's all the Wu-tang / Pharcyde / Group Home releases etc. - relax! you'll find them & a lot more in Volume II, dropping soon…

Skillz the DJ Game Released on Ipad this Thursday 08.09.11!

This thursday Skillz the Dj Game will finally be available to buy for Ipad users! Me & my brother DJ Daredevil have been working on the soundtrack for a couple of years now for the Hong-Kong based production company Playpen Studios, creating specially re-edited & cut-up versions of tracks from the likes of Stones Throw Records, Ministry of Sound, Ninja Tune, Hospital Records & Om Records. I've been playing a pre-release version of the game for sometime now & I can tell you it's a whole lot of fun, the control system is extremely intuitive, & a lot closer to the real thing than previous dj rhythm games!

A whole heap of videos have been released from various sources, I've posted up a few of my favourite ones I worked on below, check 'em out!

Skillz: Hands-On Video - Hospital Megamix (Hard) from Playpen Studios on Vimeo.

Skillz: Hands-On Video - Bad Mind People (Hard) from Playpen Studios on Vimeo.

Droppin' Science w/ Chris Read - This Saturday @ Vibe Bar, 8-3!

Droppin' Science is back this May 7th & this time we've been granted a late license, so we'll be rockin' with you til 3am! Expect a block party style mix of hip-hop, funk & disco breaks & a few surprises. This time around residents Matman, Nickname & Daredevil will be joined by our special guest dj Chris Read (Music of Substance/BBE), who returns after smashing it for us back in April last year.

Chris, a collector of hip hop, funk, soul boogie and related beats and jazz based music since the late eighties came to prominence as a club DJ through his involvement in Substance (one of the UK's largest and longest running hip hop and funk nights) and his 2 year spell as mix DJ on BBC Radio 1Xtra. In recent years his steady output of high profile mix albums has allowed Chris to DJ around the globe. However, it is Chris's broad musical taste and knowledge and ability to throw the unexpected into the mis that have sealed his reputation as a popular club DJ. A resident at london's popular clubnights Classic Material & So Much Soul, Chris has recently joined acclaimed record label BBE's roster as a compiler & mix DJ.

Don’t sleep on East London’s liveliest Hip Hop party, every 1st saturday of the month.

'Everywhere + Nowhere' Film Review

It's not often you see a film in which the main character is a dj, one of my favourite hiphop-related movies Juice comes to mind, but that was way back in '92!

Everywhere & Nowhere is a new british film from 'Kidulthood' director Menhaj Huda starring relative newcomer James Floyd. Before shooting the movie James did his research by hanging out with myself & the Droppin' Science crew, joining us on our podcast, taking notes at our night at vibe bar & getting a few dj lessons at our homes. We attended the premier this week & can report that he did a great job in the lead role, as did the rest of the excellent cast!

The verdict? an entertaining film with a dope soundtrack that deals with the pressures of a young British-Asian torn between his family traditions, his friends and his love for djing - we recommend you go check it out asap, it opens in cinemas this friday, check to watch the trailer.
