DJ Matman - The New Jack Swing Mix

In the summer of 2012 I was invited to dj at the Chocolate Bear Productions annual barbeque here in London, alongside a ridiculously sick line up of djs - we were all asked to choose a genre to play, I went for New Jack Swing, and it went a little something like this…

For those that don't know, the New Jack Swing sound of the late 80's and early 90's brought together Hip Hop and R & B for the first time, to great commercial success. I first encountered it as a 9 year old, when I had the Ghostbusters 2 soundtrack featuring Bobby Brown's 'On My Own' on heavy rotation in my oversized walkman! This mix includes a lot of the biggest dancefloor classics of the time alongside a few not so well-known joints, and of course plenty of Teddy Riley productions.

Big shout to Shernay & all the djs who rocked at the CBP BBQ - Druskillz, Kidkanevil, Mr Thing, Kutmah, Bruce Wayne, Chris P Cuts, Shredded Pete, Martyn & Leroy

Please share / tweet / blog if you are feeling this! :)

Droppin' Science Mondays w/ Chris Read, Matman & Daredevil Next Monday @ Proud, Camden

London has a new home for hip hop on Monday nights!

FREE ENTRY ALL NIGHT!!

We're back again to tear the roof off Proud Camden's South gallery! this coming Monday we are joined by special guest DJ Chris Read (BBE/Classic Material) alongside resident DMC/ITF Champs Daredevil & Matman!

Anyone who has been to our nights before knows the drill - we rock the party HARD with a fast paced selection of Hip Hop from ALL eras, laced with occasional funk & soul bangers & whatever else we feel like playing!

Check out the pics from last week here: http://on.fb.me/P7cKBn

About Chris Read:

Chris, a collector of hip hop, funk, soul boogie and related beats and jazz based music since the late eighties came to prominence as a club DJ through his involvement in Substance (one of the UK's largest and longest running hip hop and funk nights) and his 2 year spell as mix DJ on BBC Radio 1Xtra. In recent years a steady output of high profile mix albums has allowed Chris to DJ around the globe. However, it is Chris's broad musical taste and knowledge and ability to throw the unexpected into the mix that have sealed his reputation as a popular club DJ.

In 2010, Chris was named as one of nine 'Stars of the Future' by Mixcloud and ranked a respectable #17 in the site's top 100 DJs of 2010. In 2011, Chris joined the roster of heavyweight labels BBE and Breakin Bread, releasing 2 official mix albums for the former and 2 seven inch singles for the latter.

Classic Material x Normski x Foot Patrol Launch 1.08.12

Next Thursday I have the honour of djing at the launch party for this dope T-shirt collaboration between Classic Material, Normski & Foot Patrol. Come down to snap up one of the limited edition tees, drink free beer & get down to the sounds of myself, Mr Thing, and Classic Material's Chris Read & Nick Armitage (aka Nickname)!

Normski exploded onto the public stage in the early 90s as presenter of the groundbreaking BBC2 programmes ‘Def 2’ and ‘Dance Energy’, broadcasting the previously under-represented elements of the UK’s black music & dance music scenes to a new audience. For many years prior to this, Normski had been documenting UK club culture and the rise of hip hop culture in the UK through photography. As a key figure in the UK’s early hip hop community, Normski enjoyed unrivaled access to the rising stars of the home grown scene and high profile touring acts from the US. Utilising the iconic imagery of Normski’s photography dating from the mid to late 1980s, Footpatrol is pleased to present a collaboration with Normski and partners Classic Material, a London based collective of music makers, designers and photographers. The collaboration takes the form of six limited edition t-shirts featurng five of Normski’s most iconic photographs featuring images of artists Big Daddy Kane, MC Lyte, Kool Moe Dee, Public Enemy’s Flavor Flav and the UK’s Demon Boyz. A sixth t-shirt bearing the Classic Material logo completes the collection.

“Two of hip-hop’s greatest ever M.C.’s perform live on stage”

BIG DADDY KANE

Kane has undisputedly defined the term “lyricist” in the world of hip-hop. Along with the vocal ingenuity he brought to the genre, he also introduced innovative live performances as well. Kane was not only an M.C but a full entertainer. He revolutionized hip-hop fashion and the way hip-hop shows were performed.

During a career which spans nearly 25 years he’s received several gold albums and endless music accolades including a Grammy award. His catalogue of music consists includes the LP "Long Live The Kane" that features the hit songs "Isn’t No Half Steppin'" and "Raw." The LP "It's A Big Daddy Thing" featured "Smooth Operator" "Warm It Up" and the Teddy Riley produced hit "I Get The Job Done." The LP “Taste Of Chocolate" features "Hard Being The Kane" and "All Of Me" as well as a duet with the legendary Barry White. And most recently 1998s veterenz day.

As a powerful figure in the rap game, Kane possessed a prodigious rhyming technique honed from numerous B-boy battles. Brought up in the tough Bedford-Stuyvesant neighbourhood of Brooklyn. By high school, he had begun writing poetry and looking up to the pioneering rap of Melle Mel, Grandmaster Caz, and Kool Moe Dee. As his wordplay improved, Kane was asked to write material for the Juice Crew and Kurtis Blow. By 1988 his songs had been covered by Biz Markie “Vapors” and the notorious “Pickin’ Boogers” and Roxanne Shanté “Have a Nice Day” and “Go On Girl”. After touring as Shanté’s DJ, Kane decided to try rapping.

For his first album, produced by Marley Marl, the songs Kane wrote for himself proved as wide-ranging as those he’d written for others. The macho posturing on “Raw” became his calling card, with the rest of the album ranging from the romantic “The Day You’re Mine” to the cool and funky “Ain’t No Half-Steppin’”. Kane’s subsequent albums relied on a similar recipe. In 1984, he met Biz Markie, and the two struck up a friendship. Kane would go on to co-write some of the Biz's best-known raps, and both eventually became important members of the Queens-based Juice Crew, a collective headed by renowned producer Marley Marl. Big Daddy Kane is currently working on a new album with his band Connie Price and the Keystone called "The Last Supper".

BIZ MARKIE

The diabolical Biz Markie brings more than 26 years of solid hip-hop acumen and an overwhelming fan-base that stretches from New York City to Japan to Europe. At the age of 14, Marcel Hall dazzled his neighbourhood under the alias of Biz Markie. His music scene debut began in 1985 as a beat box for Roxanne Shante of the Juice Crew., Biz is the definition of longevity and has managed to remain one of the most notable artists and DJs in the industry. Born to embrace hip-hop, Biz is originally from Harlem and began his journey to musical anarchy, beat boxing his way into hip-hop heads' hearts and delivering humorous, witty rhymes that made him loveable and admired by music fans all over.

Biz Markie shows no signs of stopping. He currently Djs and performs in club and concert venues all over the world. Biz's has numerous television credits include MTV2's Hip Hop Squares, Celebrity House Hunters, "Celebrity Fit Club" and recently Nick Jr's "Yo Gabba Gabba" doing the beat box of the day. Simply put, Biz Markie is one of the most sought after Entertainers/DJs in the business.
