Matman x Never Second: Hip Hop Debuts Mix [Stream/Download]

Matman x Never Second - Hip Hop Debuts by Dj Matman on Mixcloud

For my collaboration mix with the dope new clothing label 'Never Second' I decided to create a mix reflecting the brand's name - featuring a combination of both debut appearances and singles from many of my favourite Hip Hop artists and groups, including a couple of b-sides and remixes.

Due to the broad scope of this theme I decided to mainly stick to including artists that I grew up listening to in the 90's for this one, but even at 50 tracks deep there are many notable exclusions here, so a sequel could be on the cards at some point!

Recent Happenings

I've been a little quiet on here for the last month or so, I had a lot going on! So here's a little catchup on some of the best bits I neglected to tell you about...

A definite highlight of the last month or so was djing two nights in a row at the infamous Jazz Cafe in London - First up was a set supporting one of hip hop's all time greatest MCs, the legendary Big Daddy Kane, pictured with me above! He gave an incredible show as always, and the event presented with me with a rare opportunity to play a load of my favourite 80's & early 90's hip hop tracks, including a best of Juice Crew set. The following night I was back at the Jazz Cafe to spin all eras Hip Hop & R'n'B videos, yes videos! at the new Doctors Orders A/V night, I'm back at it there again this coming Friday night, more on that in a bit...

Another highlight of the month was headlining the fresh new Hip Hop/RnB night 'Next Level' in Stoke Newington - look out for these guys, they certainly know how to throw a party, and this one allowed me to go where I wanted to musically - playing a wide range of styles covering all eras of hip hop & rnb, from the classics right up to present day trap bangers and everything in between! Look out for future collaborations with these guys, I promise I will give you more notice next time!

Finally I have good news for those missing the Droppin' Science Show ! We will be back putting out regular mixes of the freshest hip hop around this June, in a new and improved format! Stay tuned...

New Video: DJ Matman Scratching On 7" Vinyl 45's!

Dj Matman - 7" Mix Vol.1

7" Mix Vol. 1 by Dj Matman on Mixcloud

After rocking a couple of sets playing exclusively 7" vinyl at their 'Digga Please' parties, DJs Shepdog (Nice Up) and Kombine (Jazz Cafe) officially inducted me into the crew - so it's only right I represent with a mix based on my recent live set for them!

Expect pure block party vibes from this one: Classic Hip Hop laced with Soul, Funk, Disco, B-Boy breaks, Reggae/Dancehall and 90's RNB, No FX, no multitracking, just a crate of crackly 45s mixed, scratched & juggled (with a couple of sneaky edits so you don't have to hear my records skip!).

The cover image is composed of photos of every record played, displayed in the order they appear in the mix - get a closer look at it HERE

There's plenty more where this came from so look out for volume 2!

DJ Matman - 10 Minute 80's B-Boy Megamix

10 Minute 80's B-Boy Megamix by Dj Matman on Mixcloud

I was recently commissioned by Urban Edge Promotions to create this 10 minute long mix of classic and well-known 80's B-Boy tracks for a series of forthcoming live shows - I ended up going in on it pretty hard, every track on here is re-edited or remixed in one way or another! As usual with my mixes there is also a fair bit of juggling & scratching involved, but not too much as the focus here is on the dancers.

If you are a bit of a music geek you may notice I used the break from the UK hip hop classic 'Untitled' by Hardnoise in my remix of White Lines - if you really know your stuff you may even feel inclined to point out that 'untitled' was released in 1990, not in the 80's, but guess what? I don't care. Anyway, enjoy!
